Gardasil Should Be a Choice
We have all heard about the shot gardasil by now at least I think most of us have. It’s a vaccine to protect women against four types of HPV. Two of them protect against cervical cancer up to 70%. The other two protect against genital warts up to 90%. HPV is short for Human Papilloma Virus. It is a sexually transmitted disease. The shot is recommended for girls 11-26 years old of age (CDC).
I think that it is a great thing that a vaccine has been made to protect women against cervical cancer. I feel it is a major break through and that women should be vaccinated if they possibly can.
The problem is Governors like Rick Perry of Texas are trying to make the vaccine mandatory for sixth grade girls to get the shot to enter school. Parents are able to opt out of it if they so wish. (Mandate in Texas)He made this an executive order so it went straight to a vote. It did not pass in the house. (Texas House Rejects Order)
I felt it was being pushed to hard on parents. Why should a sixth grader need this to enter school? My point is that they shouldn’t. I know people would argue that what Rick Perry did was in the best interest of women in Texas. But I think that they would feel differently if they found out that donations were made by Merck to Governor Rick Perry which might have influenced his decision (How Vaccine Policy)
Sense Merck has this vaccine and it is the first of its kind they stand to make millions of dollars in the next ten years. Glaxo Smith Kline is coming out with a similar vaccine but will make less then that of Merck. Merck is just trying to lobby states for similar initiatives so that they can make a bigger profit then the competition. (HPV Vaccine Slow)
In a survey I conducted of women with children and young adult women who may or may not be sexually active approve of the drug and would get the shot themselves. When asked if they would give it to their daughters almost all of them said yes. But when asked if they should be given the vaccine at the sixth grade level just to enter school all of they said no to it except for one person.
I feel another problem with this vaccine is the commercial they use to promote their product. I feel one major component they failed to mention is to let people know how they can contract the disease. Letting them know that it is a sexually transmitted disease. No where in the ad does it say how you could get this. If people knew this it may prevent them from entering a relationship and they would probably think about it twice.
I want parents and young women to get sex education in school for our young people. Not only should abstinence be taught, but prevention as well. We send the wrong message by saying wait till marriage. What if some of these young adults haven’t waited. They shouldn’t be left behind. They should be told use condoms, the best way to prevent STDs, and to use birth control if you so chose to have sex to prevent an unwanted pregnancy. These would be ways to help young women everywhere.
Another thing I want women to do is go get their pap test done. This means three years after first intercourse but no later then age 21. And yearly for ages 21-30. (American Cancer Society) qtd (Paps Enduring Power). Just because there is a new vaccine out there to prevent cervical cancer doesn’t mean you don’t have to go get them done. These tests are the only way to tell you if you have cervical cancer or not so go get your test done today.
We can help our children and young women by arming them with information they can use. Knowledge is the key they should use it to help protect themselves. Everyone has a part.

Annotated Bibliography
For my annotated bibliography I have multiple sources from different sections. I got some of my sources out of the newspaper, our very own databases and one from my sister’s doctor about the vaccine gardasil. In my current annotated bibliography I have nine sources. I still have to conduct a survey for my last and final resource for the paper.
Finding information for my topic gardasil was kind of difficult. There were tons of articles on the controversy of making it a requirement for young girls to be vaccinated to get into school. But that’s not all I wanted to base my paper on because a lot of it was people voicing their opinion on the matter.
I was kind of discouraged by this but I seem to be making progress with the whole thing I chose to write about the topic because I feel very strong about the matter. I feel the vaccine should be mandatory like any other vaccine out there and that you should be able to opt out of it as a parent of a child. But my thing I also want to stress is that it should not be mandatory for young girls to get into school that is just ridiculous to me. I also want to make it a point that HPV is a sexually transmitted disease and that is not being told to young people with the commercials they have promoting this vaccine.
I feel what Governor Rick Perry of Texas did was wrong. By making a bill to get young girls by sixth grade to get vaccinated to enter school was way off. He made it an executive order so that there wouldn’t be any debate about it on the floor. It went straight to a vote. His bill proposed nine year old girls be vaccinated to enter the sixth grade and gave parents the option to opt out of it if they wanted to. Well the bill didn’t make it and I was very happy about that because it was being pushed upon them very strongly.
This is just some of the things I will be touching on in essay four. Hopefully I can inspire some change for people everywhere sense “cervical cancer kills more then 230,000 women world wide about eighty percent of them in developing countries.”(Mandavilli) I sorted my sources by relevance to the subject from least important to really important.
Human Papillomavirus Vaccine What You Need To Know. Department of Health and
Human Services.
This was a sheet given to me when my younger sister got the shot of gardasil. It has information about how it is supposed to protect you. Also has information on what some of the side effects you might feel after you get your shot. It also has some facts on how it is transmitted how many people have the STD and much more useful information of where to go to find out more information.
I found this information to be very helpful because it is really straight to the point. It is very easy for anyone to read if they needed to. I felt that this was a source I could trust sense it came from the department of health.
O’Beirne, Kate. “A Mandate in Texas.” National Review 59.3(2007):18-20 Academic Search Premier. 29 March 2007 < http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=aph&AN=24117466&site=ehost-live >
This article talks about the governor in Texas making it a requirement for sixth grade girls to vaccinated. He is facing a lot of critics for it. He wants to protect young girls against HPV. It also gives some facts about HPV.
I found this information to be very helpful, because I saw sides of the argument I might have not even considered or thought of yet. I found this article in a newspaper so it’s easy for all to read.
Napoli, Maryann. “How Vaccine Policy Is Made: The Story Of Merck and Gardasil.” Health Facts 32.3 (2007):1-3. Master File Premier. 29 March 2007 < http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=f5h&AN=24286475&site=ehost-live
This article talks about the special interest of Governor Rick Perry and how one of his former employers works for Merck. And that this is the reason for him pushing it so hard by making it an executive order. It also talks about how Merck is pushing it so much because there is another vaccine similar to Gardasil about to come out from the competition.
The article I found to be very useful I did not know some of the reasons for such a strong push on the market for Gardasil. The article was very easy to read I found it to be very informative.
Frosch, Dan. Texas House Rejects Order by Governor on Vaccines. New York: The New York Times, 14 March 2007
This article talks about the issue making gardasil a mandatory vaccine for sixth grade girls in the state. It gives pros and cons to the situation as for the people for it and against it. It also talks about another governor in another state who is going to sign a similar bill. But the main idea of this article was that the House rejected his bill by an incredible amount of support against it.
I thought this was a good article I chose it gives you viewpoints from all sides of the story. I felt it was very helpful because it gives you information very straight forward. This is not a scholarly article but very good writing.
Mindey, Connie. Pap’s Enduring Power. Phoenix: The Arizona Republic, 27 March 2007
In this article I found that it supported the new vaccine but really was sending a message a push for women to get there routine pap test done. It said just because there is a new vaccine out there doesn’t mean you should avoid your test because of this. Urged women to go routinely for them to know the only sure way if they have cervical cancer or not.
I found this information to be very helpful because it gave women tips of when to start going when pap test should stop as well. It was real easy to read not difficult at all to understand the message they were trying to send across.
Napoli, Maryann. “Those Ubiquitous Gardasil Vaccine Ads: Selling Independence, But No Hard Facts.” Health Facts 32.3(2007):6-6. Master File Premier, 11 April 2007
This article talks about the television ad on gardasil. It criticizes it for some of the lines it uses to sell its products. It also talks about how it fails to mention that it is a sexually transmitted disease. Which I feel was the biggest component that Merck left out.
I found that this article was very helpful especially in my favor, because I felt very strongly about that commercial to. I feel it will only help me when it comes to the proposal part of my essay.
“HPV vaccines may have slow uptake.(human papilloma virus).” Pharmaceutical Technology Europe 18.9 ( September 2006): 21 (1). Expanded Academic ASAP. Thomas Gale. Gateway Community College (AZ). 11 April 2007
This article talks about the estimated cost that merck is supposedly going to make off the gardasil vaccine. Sense it is the first of its kind it can set the going price for the vaccine and make much more then it competitor Glaxo Smith Klein. Talks about the potential moneys it could make in 2010 and it has a chart to show the growth in the next three years.
I found this article to be very useful seeing how it provided how much money merck would make in the next three years and it was crazy. I like the fact that it gives you some background knowledge of the subject and how it price is determined by merck sense they were the first to put it out there.
Mandavilli, Apoorva. “27 Policy: FDA Approves Vaccine for Cervical Cancer.(Top 100 SCIENCE STORIES OF 2006)(Brief article).” Discover 28.1 (Jan 2007): 42(1). Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center. Thomas Gale. Gateway Community College (AZ). 11 April 2007
Talks about the vaccine and how it’s a break through because it’s the second vaccine to target a sexually transmitted disease. Also talks about who the vaccine could be used for and some of the issues like the cost of the three round shot. It goes on to say that it is the most expensive vaccine out there today.
Found that this information was informative but I have a lot of the things it has already stated. Im unsure at this point if im going to use this in my proposal argument. Was really easy to read I felt it was a little short but then I guess it just stated what was really needed.
“Keeping Choice on The Gardasil Vaccine.”Christian Science Monitor 99.54(2007):8-8. Academic Search Premier. 11 April 2007 This article gives a different solution to the problem of a mandatory vaccine. It suggest that the parents should be able to opt in for the vaccine if they so wish for there child to be vaccinated. It talks about how twenty states are considering bills for girls to vaccinated with the vaccine gardasil.
This article is very well put together by offering a solution instead of just saying through out the whole thing that it is a bad idea for girls to be vaccinated. It was very easy to read and understand what was being said through out the article. I think this might be one I may use in my final paper.

Evalutating Chocolate
We have all heard chocolate is bad for you. But who would have thought that chocolate could be good for you. In this paper we will explore some of the ingredients, myths, and benefits that chocolate has to offer.
There are some ingredients in chocolate that are real mood changers, and some that help improve your health. These are three key ingredients that make us feel the way we do. Caffeine, theobromine, and phenyethylamine have been to show that they intensify feelings of love. Phenyethylamine is a mood elevator and acts like and anti-depressant for people. Theres also an ingredient called phenols which Harvard studies show reduce the risk of getting heart disease (health).
So some people believe that eating chocolate causes acne but that isnt true. Studies have shown that it actually has no effect on your skin. There is also another myth out there that chocolate is high in caffeine but that is also false. The amount of caffeine in chocolate candy is significantly lower than that in coffee (chocolate facts).
I never knew that chocolate could be good for you, and that it is a mood elevator. My boyfriend keyed me in a couple of months ago. He told me when or if I'm feeling sad to grab a piece of chocolate, and suck on it, and I would feel better. I asked him why he just said that it releases good endorphins. So I tried it not believing it would work, and it did. Within five minutes of eating that piece of chocolate I felt a little uplifted about my whole life situation. I later looked it up on why and found that phenyethylamine one of the ingredients in chocolate was the reason for this.
In my survey I found of men and women they said they felt different after eating a piece of chocolate. I didnt ask how big the piece of chocolate assuming that they ate a big enough piece to get a result form it. Most of the people I surveyed preferred milk chocolate over dark. Although they both have benefits dark chocolate has more benefits then milk. Dark chocolate appears to raise good cholesterol and slow down bad cholesterol (Clark). It also raises antioxidants in the blood by 18% (Clark).
Overall in all the research I've done its my opinion that chocolate could be good for you. As long as you dont over indulge yourself you should experience some pretty good benefits. Heres one more thing I want to leave you with in a study conducted by Harvard University men who ate chocolate three times a week versus those who dont lived a year longer then those who dont eat chocolate at all.

Research
So research is going just fine. What Im I talking about it is happening slowly but surely. I found two papers to use just the other day and theyve seemed to be helpful this far. Im going to access the databases today to help me find more research. I know that I can find more articles for my subject because the topic is fairly new. Its all about digging for the right thing to match my paper. And to have a successful annotated bibliography.

New Subject
So today I decided to do a mixture of a free write and also update you on my situation. Since my last subject wasn't bringing enough information up. I decided to change the subject and I did. I am now going to evaluate chocolate. Changing my subject to a wider scope has helped me out tremendously. Now I just have to play the game of catch up and crank out this essay in time for class Thursday which I hope I can do with out it being a horrible train wreck. I really appreciated the advise I got from others yesterday in class at our workshop it really helped me out a great deal. I'm going to put the framework up for it so that during spring break I can work on the final essay. Hopefully then is when I can really get my work done I work well under pressure so it shouldn't be to bad.

I really like my first proposal and I'm unsure of what to do if anyone has any suggestions please feel free to leave a comment. It would be greatly appreciated.

V-Day
Oh well Happy Valentines Day to you and to all. Umm no not really its not even a real holiday just some day to show that special someone you care about them when you should be doing that all year long. Men lavish there women with big teddy bears chocolates and flowers. Which to me is such a bore and truly unneeded. Men all we really want is to know you love and care for us the way we care for you. Getting the same stuff year after year is so lame. Its not that I'm trying to be a basher on love or v-day I just feel its to overrated. Me and my boyfriend know the real meaning that neither one of us needs gifts to make the other happy, just each other is good enough for the both of us spending time together with our son brings us both satisfaction some may not even know.

Just a Thought
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. I think that is so amazing and true for lots of people no matter what path they take in life. It all begins with that one step into school into the work place or any real connections you can bring it to. I found this quote in a magazine and was simply amazed by it. It put a smile on my face to wrap my mind on something like that first step that seems so small but is really quite larger then you think!

Dear Mr. Editor
I think minimum wage for all is fair. Yet our lawmakers here in Arizona passed a bill saying disabled people with developmental delays can receive less then $6.75 an hour. I as someone who’s helped with people with developmental delays believe it does an injustice to them. When you apply for a job on the application it says it will not discriminate against people with disabilities. But this bill is doing exactly that allowing employers to pay them less then minimum wage. I’m sure there has to be a better way or a compromise of some sort to allow these workers to get a better wage. Some of these workers get pennies for it and it is just not fair.
Sincerely,

Reflection
My audience is the readers of the Arizona Republic. People of all generations, ethnic background, and economic status. My purpose for writing this is to inform people. To educate them on some items they might not know about. So that they to can help and move for a change too. I didn’t necessarily have a target audience because whoever reads the publication is in my mind the target audience. I think they would all get some kind of knowledge from my letter. I want and hope it will reach all kinds of audiences.
Ethos it means a lot to me because I’ve helped with people who have developmental delays and I don’t think it is fair for them to be treated like that. I think my tone is of concern for these people to be treated fairly. I feel it is sincere and not full of anger which is one tone I almost wanted to use ,but at the last minute I didn’t because I felt it would only hurt my letter and my point.
Logos having worked with these people makes me feel like I have to stand up for them and help educate people for the cause. My personal experience has a great deal of why I feel so strongly about the topic. I only want what is right and fair for these people. I’m sure it has to strike a cord in someone else and cause a reaction.
The occasion is to move for a change its time we stand up for all. We all voted this last mid election for a raise in minimum wage. Which passed and it went up to $6.75 an hour. Why is it these people should be exempt from that. They shouldn’t be and at the very least I believe they deserve it.

Freewrite
Today I chose to do a freewrite because Im really unsure of what to do for this blog. Im just trying to fill the paper to make the grade. I just got done typing up our letter to the editor and I think I did an ok job. Today is the day we turn it in for a grade I can only hope for the best. With a sick baby at home with two ear infections it was really hard to try and crank out a final draft. But its done now so I can put that behind me know, and start to work on some catch work for math.

Confusion
At first I was confused about the analysis part of essay one, but once we went through the peer reveiw in class it cleared up awhole lot. I now know and understand what is needed to make this essay complete. In the classroom setting it seems to make a big diffrence with my writing projects or any other thing that I need cleared up instead of being at home on my own. Thanks Matt.
